Honoring Major Dr. Anuradha
Major Dr. Anuradha, born in 1960 into a progressive family, grew up with values rooted in service, courage,& compassion. Inspired by the belief that every individual could realize their fullest potential, she pursued a childhood dream of joining the armed forces. At the time, the only path for women into the army was through medicine, so she trained as an anaesthesiologist, blending her passion for healthcare with her aspiration to serve the nation. Her exemplary service led her to the rank of Major in the Indian Army, where she made history as the first woman to operate India’s Arjun tank. A transformative moment during her medical training, witnessing 42 villagers die of malaria in a single season, left her deeply moved and determined to address the healthcare needs of India’s rural and tribal regions. After seven years in the army, she made a bold decision: to move to Khargone, a remote village in Madhya Pradesh, where she founded the NGO Aastha Gram. At Aastha Gram, she dedicated herself to the underserved, particularly children with special needs, individuals affected by leprosy, and destitute. Her holistic approach combined medical care, rehabilitation, inclusive education, and community empowerment. Over time, she spearheaded 36 impactful initiatives to uplift those often forgotten by mainstream systems. Locals fondly called her “Didi”, a testament to the trust and affection she inspired. Her efforts culminated in the founding of a special needs school and daycare center in 2000, followed by a hostel for deaf, blind, and differently-abled children in 2011. She also started an inclusive school serving over 200 students, both with and without disabilities and established an inclusive education curriculum that drew international attention and research. To strengthen her work, she also pursued a B.Ed. in Special Education, ensuring her initiatives remained professional, evidence-based, and forward-looking. Until her passing in 2023, Major Dr. Anuradha remained a tireless advocate, delivering care, challenging stigma, and transforming mindsets. Her unique ability to blend military discipline with maternal compassion created a model of service that continues to inspire. The Major Dr. Anuradha Memorial special educator Award: In her loving memory, her family and Digdarshika have launched the Major Dr. Anuradha Memorial Award, an annual recognition for special educators working selflessly to uplift and empower the special needs community. The award will be given to recognize special educators in different fields. Each year, it will focus on a different area of special needs support. For the year 2025-2026, the spotlight is on Intellectual Disability. This award celebrates not only achievement, but also the spirit of inclusivity, compassion, and unwavering service that defined Major Dr. Anuradha’s life. Through this award, her legacy of resilience, compassion, and boundless service continues to inspire new generations.
मेजर डॉ. अनुराधा का जन्म 1960 में एक प्रगतिशील परिवार में हुआ था। उनका पालन-पोषण सेवा, साहस और करुणा जैसे मूल्यों के साथ हुआ। उनका विश्वास था कि हर व्यक्ति में अपनी पूर्ण क्षमता तक पहुँचने का सामर्थ्य होता है, और इसी प्रेरणा ने उन्हें बचपन से ही सेना में शामिल होने का सपना देखने के लिए प्रेरित किया। उस समय महिलाओं के लिए सेना में प्रवेश की एकमात्र राह, चिकित्सा थी , इसलिए उन्होंने एनेस्थीसियोलॉजिस्ट के रूप में प्रशिक्षण लिया, जिससे उन्होंने सेवा के प्रति अपने जुनून को राष्ट्र सेवा से जोड़ा। अपनी उत्कृष्ट सेवा के कारण वे भारतीय सेना में 'मेजर' के पद तक पहुँचीं और भारत के अर्जुन टैंक को चलाने वाली पहली महिला बनकर इतिहास रच दिया। ग्रामीण सेवा की ओर कदम: अपने मेडिकल प्रशिक्षण के दौरान उन्होंने एक ही वर्ष में 42 ग्रामीणों को मलेरिया से मरते देखा, इस घटना ने उन्हें अंदर तक झकझोर दिया और तब से ही उन्होंने भारत के ग्रामीण और जनजातीय क्षेत्रों की स्वास्थ्य जरूरतों को पूरा करने का संकल्प लिया। सात वर्षों तक सेना में सेवा देने के बाद उन्होंने एक साहसिक निर्णय लिया: मध्य प्रदेश के एक सुदूर क्षेत्र, खरगोन में जाकर ‘आस्था ग्राम’ नामक एक गैर-सरकारी संस्था (NGO) की स्थापना की। आस्था ग्राम: समर्पण और सेवा का केंद्र: आस्था ग्राम में उन्होंने वंचित वर्गों की सेवा को अपना जीवन बना लिया, विशेष रूप से विशेष आवश्यकताओं वाले बच्चों, कुष्ठ रोग से प्रभावित व्यक्तियों और निराश्रित लोगों के लिए। उनका दृष्टिकोण समग्र था: चिकित्सा सेवा, पुनर्वास, समावेशी शिक्षा, और समुदाय सशक्तिकरण. समय के साथ उन्होंने 36 प्रभावशाली पहलों का नेतृत्व किया, जिससे वे लोग लाभान्वित हुए जिन्हें मुख्यधारा की व्यवस्था अक्सर अनदेखा कर देती है। स्थानीय लोग उन्हें स्नेहपूर्वक "दीदी" कहकर बुलाते थे, जो उनके प्रति विश्वास और प्रेम का प्रतीक है। शिक्षा और समावेशन की प्रेरणा वर्ष 2000 में उन्होंने एक विशेष आवश्यकता विद्यालय और डे-केयर सेंटर की स्थापना की, और 2011 में दृष्टिहीन, श्रवणहीन और अन्य रूप से दिव्यांग बच्चों के लिए एक छात्रावास की शुरुआत की। उन्होंने एक समावेशी स्कूल की भी स्थापना की जहाँ 200 से अधिक छात्र, जिनमें दिव्यांग और सामान्य दोनों प्रकार के छात्र साथ पढ़ते हैं। उनके समावेशी शिक्षा पाठ्यक्रम को अंतरराष्ट्रीय स्तर पर मान्यता और शोध का विषय भी बना। अपने कार्य को और मजबूत करने के लिए उन्होंने विशेष शिक्षा में बी.एड. की पढ़ाई भी पूरी की, ताकि उनके प्रयास व्यावसायिक, प्रमाण-आधारित और दूरदर्शी बने रहें। एक विरासत जो जीवित है 2023 में उनके निधन तक, मेजर डॉ. अनुराधा एक अथक कार्यकर्ता रहीं, उन्होंने सेवा दी, सामाजिक उपेक्षा को चुनौती दी और सोच बदलने का काम किया। सैन्य अनुशासन और मातृ स्नेह का उनका अनूठा मेल सेवा का एक ऐसा मॉडल बना जो आज भी प्रेरणा देता है। पुरस्कार की स्थापना उनकी स्मृति में, उनके परिवार और दिग्दर्शिका संस्था ने मेजर डॉ. अनुराधा स्मृति पुरस्कार की स्थापना की है, यह वार्षिक पुरस्कार उन विशेष शिक्षकों को मान्यता देता है जो विशेष आवश्यकताओं वाले समुदाय को समर्पित भाव से सशक्त बनाने का कार्य कर रहे हैं। यह पुरस्कार हर वर्ष विशेष शिक्षा के किसी एक क्षेत्र पर केंद्रित रहेगा। वर्ष 2025-2026 के लिए फोकस है: बौद्धिक दिव्यांगता (Intellectual Disability) यह पुरस्कार केवल उपलब्धियों का सम्मान नहीं करता, बल्कि उस समावेशिता, करुणा और निःस्वार्थ सेवा की भावना को भी समर्पित है, जिसने मेजर डॉ. अनुराधा के जीवन को परिभाषित किया। इस पुरस्कार के माध्यम से, उनकी दृढ़ता, करुणा और असीम सेवा की विरासत नई पीढ़ियों को प्रेरित करती रहेगी।
